What You Need To Know About Colloidal Oatmeal And Eczema

Chances are you’ve come across the ingredient colloidal oatmeal. Perhaps it is in one of the products you currently use. But what is colloidal oatmeal? What does colloidal mean? Colloidal is the process by which oat grain (yes – the same oats you eat in your oatmeal) is ground into a fine powder which is commonly used in numerous skin care products including:

  • Lotions & Moisturizers
  • Shampoos
  • Shaving Creams
  • Bath Products

Colloidal oatmeal has been used for centuries to soothe skin and help alleviate the discomfort caused by itching, inflammation and irritation associated with dry skin conditions, including eczema.

In 2003, the FDA approved colloidal oatmeal as an over-the-counter drug ingredient. It is classified as a skin protectant which temporarily protects and helps relieve minor skin irritations and itching due to eczema and rashes.

Colloidal oatmeal acts as a protective layer which helps skin retain its natural moisture and restores skin barrier integrity. In addition, colloidal oatmeal provides the following benefits:

  • Has Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory Properties
  • Helps Balance Skin’s pH Level
  • Is a Natural Ingredient

Colloidal oatmeal helps provide skin protection for a broad range of skin conditions, including eczema, and it can help reduce the use of topical steroids.

Allergic reactions to colloidal oatmeal are rare making it safe for use by most people including children 3 years and older. The exception is individuals with gluten allergies and sensitivities.
